Rules of accentual pattern a) Words with weak prefixes are accented on the root and not on the prefix E.g. correct, compose etc b) The inflexional suffix –es, -ing, and –ed do not affect the accent. E.g. remind-reminded; figure-figures; survive-surviving c) The addition of various derivational suffixes like –age, -ance, -en, -er, -ess, -ful, -hood, -ice, -ish, -ive, -less, -ly, -ment, -ness, -or, -ship, -ure and –zen does not change the accent of the main word. E.g. percent-percentage; allow-allowance; fright-frighten etc d) Words ending with –ion have the primary accent on the penultimate syllable E.g. Motion, relation, decoration, etc e) Words ending witn –ic, -ical, -ically, -ious, -ial, and –ially have the primary accent on the syllable before these suffixes. E.g. democratic, classical, t...
