Two views are juxtaposed so as to make them poignantly realistic. The basic scenario is the appealing backwaters, peopled with insignificant lives. This life is set up against the opulent tourists. The movement of the poem is highly symbolic. It begins with the inanimate boats leading us to the human beings who survive in muddy waters. The boats have become dilapidated. Rules of accentual pattern

Rules of accentual pattern a)       Words with weak prefixes are accented on the root and not on the prefix E.g. correct, compose etc b)       The inflexional suffix –es, -ing, and –ed do not affect the accent. E.g. remind-reminded; figure-figures; survive-surviving  c)        The addition of various derivational suffixes like –age, -ance, -en, -er, -ess, -ful, -hood, -ice, -ish,   -ive, -less, -ly, -ment, -ness, -or, -ship, -ure and –zen does not change the accent of the main word. E.g. percent-percentage; allow-allowance; fright-frighten etc d)       Words ending with –ion have the primary accent on the penultimate syllable E.g. Waiting for Godot as an absurd drama

The theatre of the absurd is a phenomenon of the fifties. The writers in the Absurd Movement diagnosed humanity’s plight as a purposelessness in an existence out of harmony with its surroundings. Awareness of this lack of purpose in all produces a state of metaphysical anguish which is the central theme of Absurdists. Dramatists belonging to this group did not regard themselves as a school but they all seemed to share certain attitudes towards the predicament of the men in the universe. The theatre of the absurd presents anxiety, despair and a sense of loss at the disappearance of solutions, illusions and purposelessness.
